The Food - Folic acid is a substance that is essential in the process of pregnancy. Adequate intake of folic acid to ensure optimal fetal development and birth of a baby is perfect. The scientists also agree that the bread can be enriched with folic acid to prevent spina bifida.

Spina bifida is the most common conditions of a group of disorders known as neural tube defects (neural tube defects / NTD). Neural tube is part of the fetus that would develop into the brain and spinal cord.

Damage occurs when the neural tube fails to close properly during the early weeks of pregnancy. Some symptoms include physical disabilities, developmental delays, and impaired bowel and bladder control.

According to the Daily Mail, this condition is 5.000 attacked children in the UK each year. However, in Chile, the birth of a child with symptoms of neural tube defects is reduced by half after the local health minister requiring folic acid added to flour.

"To help prevent birth defects, we recommend that pregnant women who want to mengasup daily folic acid supplement of 400 mg," said a spokesman for the UK health departments.

As a country that makes the bread as a staple food, of the United Kingdom and Chile could benefit from the bread fortified with folic acid or vitamin B9. When in Indonesia, maybe rice or rice fortified with folic acid?
